Skating has recently become a past time of mine, something that my partner has taught me. The day I
told him I wanted to craft our own, he excitedly jumped on the bandwagon with me.
The making of old school skateboards took a few weekends. We were able to create four boards, with
four unique shapes and designs.
We crafted the mould and clamps that would be used to press the plywood that would produce the bend in the nose and tail (also known as a kick). After the body was formed and measured, the steps following involved a lot of nosy machinery and tools to shape the wood. With a bunch of sanding, the end product was smooth decks, reminiscent of old school skateboards.
Using two different mediums - spray paint and acrylic - I added our personalities onto the board. Spray painting allowed shapes and colours to flow naturally and blend together. Spray paint was a much less technical and flowing media, crafting easy shapes and natural blending of the colours.
Two unstable board (as the holes we drilled were too close together), however, two boards we use constantly. There is such a nice feeling that comes with saying to someone who asked where they are from, “We made them ourselves”.
